Dog Mom Attachment Parenting

Silas hates bath. HAAAATES bath. He tolerates showers better (my theory is that he’s used to rain, but not being immersed in water).

But my dog has a skin infection. Much like his mother, Silas has thin skin. That makes him more susceptible to skin infections, says the vet. Last time Silas had a skin infection, he was on antibiotics. But he’s a selective genius and learned how to eat the meat flavored pill pocket without actually eating the pill.

So this time around, Silas was prescribed a medicated shampoo. That has to sit for 5-10 minutes before being rinsed. Silas typically tries to jump out of the tub at minute two, and then puts on a martyred expression and whimpers and shakes for the rest of bath time.

Time for a new strategy. I decided to throw Silas in the shower with me and wash both our hair at the same time. And he was so well behaved, like a fake dog in a commercial. Like Eddie from Frasier. He actually sat down instead of hanging his head over the edge of the tub, gasping for air. I’m proud of him in a way that owners of mellow dogs could never understand.

This is what happens when you combine years of reading mommy blogs, a deep love of dogs, and a generous glass of wine.

Paws in the Park

Paws in the Park was today at Centennial Olympic Park. It benefits Atlanta Pet Rescue, where I got Silas. American Black and Tan Coonhound Rescue, the group that saved Duke, asked Duke to attend as their breed representative. Hang out at the tent, show people how great coonhounds are, schmooze. Duke excels at staying in one place and letting strangers touch him, and Matt and I are great at telling people how much we love him.

The rescue brought two adoptable dogs with them, a bloodhound and a bluetick coonhound. The bloodhound, Lily, had the greatest hound-y face ever. Giant ears, droopy eyes, jowls and skin folds galore. Also a complete sweetheart who let every passerby stroke her ears. Adopt her here

The bluetick, Midnight Blue, met her new owner today! This really nice woman talked to Matt and I for a long time about Duke, and ended up taking Midnight Blue home for an overnight visit. I think the woman will adopt her. They seemed to click. Duke liked Midnight Blue, too. Not in a weird way. He’s always friendly with other dogs but not too interested, but he sniffed Midnight Blue for a while and kept standing next to her. In Duke’s world, they’re basically married now.

We also saw a police dog demonstration. This German shepherd scaled a 2.2 meter wooden wall. Like, ran up the side of it and jumped over. It also bit this guy on the leg (don’t worry, he had padded pants), and let go the exact second the trainer gave the command.

Silas didn’t attend because it would’ve been too overwhelming for him. I brought home some brisket dog treats for him from Lose a Finger as a consolation prize.

Future Dog Names

  1. Samson and Delilah
  2. Apollo and Starbuck
  3. Lewis and Clark

We’ve been watching a LOT of Battlestar Galactica lately.

I want this dog solely because it looks like a chinchilla. How could you ever have a bad day if you had a smiling, fluffy thing to cheer you up?

One of the best things about dogs

Every time you come home, they greet you like you’re the risen Christ. Once when I picked Silas up from the kennel after a long trip, he jumped in a circle so high in the air that he fell over. He recovered well, though.
